Busy Business people can get more done through better communication and have more fun as a result.

Let me explain.

Today I visited the hospital to teach my weekly Relaxation at the bedside for Heart, Stroke and Cancer patients. I met Harry. Harry’s Mom did not speak English so I needed Harry as an interpreter.

It was more practical for me to teach Harry the relaxation process so that he could in turn teach his mom.

Wait! There is a problem.

Harry was sitting in a chair hands tightly folded. His feet were planted firmly to the ground, solid as a rock, close to each other at a 90 degree angle and his face was tense like a pain in the neck. I asked Harry if it were better for me to teach him the relaxation process so that he could teach his mom.

Harry agreed and I proceeded to take him through the Relaxation process. You guessed it. Harry was tense like a fish out of water and unable to do the exercise.

I casually continued to talk to Harry (about all the wonderful things he enjoyed doing with his mom) and eventually like a beautiful flower within 5 minutes, Harry’s hands quietly unfolded and his legs shifted gently from a 90 degree to a 45 degree angle and Harry smiled from ear to ear. Harry was so tense and the idea of experiencing relaxation within 5 minutes seemed impossibility.

Harry thanked me for being patient with him so that he could be more patient with himself and his mom.

Lessons about Communication The next time you are communicating with someone and you don’t seem to be making process, stop and shift into a casual, positive conversation (like the weather) to help them lose their tense perspective. This good deed, if practiced regularly will allow you to become a better communicator. Taking this moment (small chat) will stop you from forcing things to happen because no one is responsive in a tense state of mind.

So what is the moral of the story?

When you learn to relax and focus on getting other people to “unfold their hands” then you will begin to touch people in amazing ways and feel the joy of bringing a smile to an unhappy face.
