Six Quick Stress Relief Tips

Six quick stress relief tips – work stress, family stress, financial stress – stress triggers are all around you and you can’t avoid them all. However, a few lifestyle changes will lower your stress level and make it a better day. Here are six stress relief tips you can employ starting today.

1. Drive in the slow lane.

What’s your hurry? Life in the fast lane is a race. Let them pass. Slow down and stay in the slow lane. You’ll get there feeling much more relaxed.

2. No more caffeine or soda?

Imagine a day without coffee or tea or soda? You bet. Coffee and tea are loaded with the stimulant drug, caffeine. Caffeine causes the heart to beat faster and blood vessels to dilate.

This “nervous” reaction actually creates perceived stress. So, switch to decaf and, if you must drink soda, choose a sugar-free, caffeine-free variety. Enjoy the day at a slightly slower pace.

3. Is talking about stress relief any good?

Amazingly, if you simply talk to a close friend or therapist about your feelings of anxiety, it will help relieve some of that anxiety. One critical point, here. Don’t discuss your feelings of stress with an individual who’s causing the stress. Talk to a sympathetic, neutral party.

Be truthful, be open and feel the stress drain from your body.

4. Does Breathing help?

This sounds so simple but the fact is, when we’re under a great deal of stress we forget to breathe. Have you ever found yourself holding your breath during a conference at work, or when you’re stuck in traffic? Be aware of your breathing. Inhale deeply.

Hold for a second and then slowly exhale. Continue to oxygenate the body in stressful situations to perform at your best.

5. How is accumulating debt related to stress?

People joke about “retail therapy” but it’s not a joke. Some people head for the mall when feeling anxious to “buy” their way out of that negative feeling. The result? Debt.

Increasing credit card balances. And more stress. You can’t buy your way to serenity and, in fact, you’re actually making a difficult situation even more so.

6. Find “me” time in each day.

Quiet, uninterrupted time spent alone, eyes closed, sitting or lying in a comfortable position and turning off conscious thought will do wonders in lowering levels of stress. Some people call it a “power nap” because it only takes 20 minutes a day and you bounce back refreshed, clear-headed and ready to take on the world. 20 minutes a day, just for you, will change your life.

So what is the moral?

We can’t eliminate the stress triggers that surround us but we can make simple changes in lifestyle to lessen the negative impact stress has on our physiology. So relax, slow down, lose the stimulants and stop spending money you don’t have. You’ll be amazed at just how peaceful life can be.

Stress Relief and Negative thoughts

Stress Relief and Negative thoughts may result in more stress.

Let me explain.

Mary was having difficulty communicating with her partner. One day Mary’s partner accused her of being very negative and she burst into a rage of uncontrollable anger for over a week. After being upset for a week, Mary asked me to assist her with her challenge.

In exploring the root cause of the problem, Mary discovered that she was in fact negative, she used the word ‘can’t’ and “have to” very often.

What problem can you create by using the word can’t?

Her partner was a business man who sought Mary’s advice on business matters. Mary’s advice was usually very negative. This caused her partner to be disturbed. He was confused because the word ‘can’t’ never exist in his belief system.

You see, Mary only understood making money from a salaried job. To be an entrepreneur to her was too risky. Her perception of self employed was too many long hours for very little money.

What lessons did Mary learn from this experience? Mary discovered three lessons.

1. Mary acknowledged she was not aware of her belief system and how it affected her partner.

2. Mary also admitted that her thoughts were all over the place. She had difficulty focusing and sleeping at night.

3. Mary now realized that she needs to find new tools or perspective on staying focused and sleeping at night because of her negative thoughts.

So what is the moral of the story?

Blowing up into burst of anger on a regular basis is not very healthy and it will cost you when you calm down. 1f you want to stay focused more often then you need to change you behavior.

Stress Relief and better Relationships

Stress Relief and better Relationships can be achieved by staying focused on your outcome. Mary was looking for stress relief but had lost sight of her outcome. Mary wanted to have a better relationship with her partner but kept on focusing on the little upsets in the relationship.

Let me explain.

Mary was in a relationship for many years and now she became irritated by the simple things her partner did, like leaving the toilet seat up after use and putting the toilet paper roll on the “wrong way”. Mary was becoming more and more frustrated.

What Mary did not realize was that her partner had always done these things (leaving the toilet seat up after use and putting the toilet paper roll on the “wrong way”.) from the time they met. So her partner wondered what was causing her to get her knickers in a knot. Check out this resource to help you to stay focus.

Mary came to see me, explaining how inconsiderate her partner had become and asking for my help. I asked Mary what had attracted her to her partner? She told me he was fun, considerate, kind and supportive in the things she was interesting in doing.

Remember, Mary had indicated that her partner was inconsiderate and this was one of the qualities she admired about her partner. So what changed? With a little facilitation on my part, Mary realized that she had lost her focus.

Initially when she met her partner she saw him as a “whole” person and respected that “whole” person. Now that Mary had lost focus she was looking for every “hole” in her partner’s character to attack.

Through the acknowledgment of her behavior, Mary discovered that she also had “holes” or imperfections, which if taken apart from her “whole” person could be very irritating.

So what is the moral of the story?

An effective outcome requires that you focus on the great qualities of that person. When you focus on the negatives you will always be aware of the person’s “holes” inadequacies. However, these inadequacies or weaknesses are sometimes more than compensated for in the positives or the awesome qualities of the “whole” person.

Can you get stress relief from communication?

Can you get stress relief from communication? No you cannot because this is a myth.

Here is a quotation that explains this myth.

“The key to any loving unconditional relationship is listening but generally we have been taught to communicate and very little time is spent on learning how to listen. It is like two tape recorders talking to each other”
