Do you think that stress relief and weight loss comes from helping others?

Let me explain.

Mary had been pulling out her hair in her fight with stress relief and weight loss for many years. Mary’s challenge relating to weight loss was that she had enrolled in many weigh loss programs but always gave up in frustration. Her frustration had reached a boiling point and she asked for my help.

Mary love helping other people and she experienced profound stress relief from the satisfaction she derived from seeing other people get what they wanted base in part on her advice. So Mary was always looking for people to help. Helping people made her day.

Helping people to Mary was amazingly effortless, like taking candy from a baby. The flip side to the story was that Mary thought that by helping others she had a right to demand that they in turn help her when she needed help. You guess it no one paid Mary any attention.

After many disappointments, arguments and raising her blood pressure, Mary decided that there had to be another solution because she felt abandoned and did not cope well when she needed help and no one pitched in to help her out.

In working with Mary, she realized that losing weight to her was “hard work.” After her perception of “hard work” was shifted through my facilitation, she now admits that she had made her life extremely difficult and stressful by having fun helping people and forsaken herself (seeing doing things for herself as hard work).

So what is the moral of the story?

Sometimes consciously or unconsciously you can set an outcome to help others (by giving advice) and you may experience great joy from this experience. However, you may not for many reasons have an outcome in life for yourself either in a specific aspect of your life or in your entire life because you never thought it necessary.
