Stress Relief: Busy Business people and Working Moms can avoid the stressful situations of visiting the sick in hospitals so that they can stay focused, find more time and enjoy the visit feeling relax and focused.
This visit to the hospital can be a heavy burden because you may not want to visit or have the time to visit. It is just another thing you have to do.
So let me introduce you to what I call the art of visiting the hospital.
As part of my community contribution for over 2 years, I have been teaching stress relief to heart, stroke and cancer patients in the hospital.
I will be sharing with you my experiences of working with the patients and their families. My responsibility as a volunteer is to facilitate relaxation, anxiety and pain relief at the bedside of the patient so that they can experience stress relief.
It is interesting that many years ago I had difficulty visiting the sick because of the smell I associated with hospitals. The smell used to make me feel ill, almost nauseous. Now here I am helping people in the hospital and teaching them how to experience stress relief.
What is really fascinating is that when you have to visit a friend or love one in the hospital it can be very a stressful situation and you are supposed to be there to offer them stress relief.
Secondly, visits are stressful because they disrupt your whole routine and sometimes you do not know the best way to handle the situation as a visitor.
Thirdly, you can become an emotional roller coaster. “How often should I visit?” You may also feel that you are not visiting often enough because you are the only person who cares.
Wait there is more… You may also get pressure from the patient because they feel you are not visiting often enough.
Here are some techniques that I have used to make visiting the sick in the hospital fun.
1. You must focus on your visit. Ask yourself what is the purpose of your visit?
2. Your visit must be your only reason to go in that direction so that you can experience stress relief.
3. You must not think of making any other stops when visiting the hospital because you will get caught up with how much time you spend at the hospital and therefore prevent yourself from experiencing stress relief.
4. If and when you become caught up in visiting too many places while going to the hospital you may feel as though you have not accomplished anything.
5. Remember the nursing staff are human and doing their best under stressful time constraints, so find a way to compliment them and share some simple form of stress relief like a smile, even if you have a small upset.
6. Treat the nursing staff as you would like to be treated.
7. Perhaps the biggest challenge is how to communicate with the patient.
**SUGGESTION: Talk to the patient about all the fun experiences you have had together or about something they are passionate about like sports, cooking, gardening or walking.
Keep it simple.
